LAUNCH Student Success is the premiere solution to increase student success, persistence, retention and graduation rates. We provide professional development and coaching, student curriculum, and a mobile student-success app to help increase student grit, persistence, and retention. When professionals and students are aware of their current personal and professional Habits, Attitudes, Beliefs and Expectations (HABE’s), along with their ability to positively make changes to these HABE’s, they become more effective than they ever thought possible. It is important to understand the foundation of all human action is human thought and our thought process forms the foundation on which we build every facet of our lives. It is essential to understand how our minds work – to examine the HABE’s that may stand in the way of releasing our vast inner potential and leading fulfilling and purposeful lives. We have partnered with an advisory team of higher education professionals from around the country to create the ultimate in student success programs and curriculum.

Why Do We Need LAUNCH Student Success?College access initiatives have helped to increase the number of students enrolling in higher education by record numbers but the question still remains, “How do we help these students successfully graduate?” Research shows that getting students off to a good start or a successful “LAUNCH” at the beginning of the academic term is critical to a student’s long-term success. Institutions, students, and families are all looking for answers on how to increase student success, so why not start at the root cause? Our starting premise is that students possess the intellect and desire to be successful in college, but often lack the skill set and processes necessary to be successful in this new chapter of life. So we have decided to provide them with both; skills and process.

Who is LAUNCH Student Success For?The LAUNCH Student Success team works directly with higher education professionals (Leadership, Faculty, Staff) and students to identify (personal, departmental, divisional & institutional) root causes to behavior and decision-making.
We use a structured process which is designed to build awareness of how our minds work, and how we can control the way we think, ultimately to achieve success in any desired part of our lives. Based on decades of research in the fields of cognitive psychology, social learning theory, and achievement, the education presented reflects the qualities and characteristics of high-performance individuals and organizations. This program teaches the effective thinking skills that apply to the college experience and beyond into real life.

How Does It Work?

LAUNCH Student Success is delivered through the LAUNCH Student Success Curriculum, with 26-units helping to create a foundational “mindset & skillset” to address both behavior and decision-making for higher ed professional and students. The concepts and education are accessed through an interactive textbook (physical/e-book, CANVAS course). Each stand-alone unit is accompanied by a video burst, activities, reflective questions, and facilitator notes. A mobile student-success app is also available to further increase student engagement. Flexibility, Resiliency, Accountability, Creativity, Leadership, Self-Advocacy, and Time Management are just a few of the foundational concepts demonstrated by past participants.

Feedback from Student Participants

This was very interesting and motivational. Keep doing it every semester.

After the event I feel more motivated for the upcoming Spring Semester. I am happy to have learned about a new method of how to study in my classes.

I truly enjoyed this event and I wish I would have known about it before. It has really helped me get perspective about my success in college.

I thought the presenter was very engaging. There was no time during the presentation when I wasn’t interested in what the presenter was saying.

Thank you for everything you put perfect day.

Mr. King was amazing! I liked the way the information was presented. He made everything personable so you could relate to what he was talking about. He gave real life experience and empowered you to strive for greatness. Absolutely wonderful event. I hope there will be others like this in the future.

I think this presenter should be welcomed back at (campus) to host more events. He was exceptionally well done. He kept the crowd engaged. And executed the information in a manner that was very relatable. I enjoyed this presenter and learned some great skills to help me succeed in my higher education.

“I’ve had the opportunity to engage Mr. King and LAUNCH on several occasions, with students and career professionals in higher education. The impact of their work is immediate, palpable and cannot be overstated. And the “Aha” moments are remarkable, if not legendary. LAUNCH is truly extraordinary and of immeasurable value to any organization.”

Originally from San Francisco, California, I attended UC Santa Barbara as an undergraduate, majoring in Black Studies and Political Science. During that time, I involved myself deeply in student and community activism and campus politics participating in the Black Students Union (BSU), the 100 Black Men (now called BPRO), Blackwatch, Praxis, Concerned Students, the Student Commission on Racial Equality and other student organizations. I was a member of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and worked as a Peer Mentor. I also was elected to leadership positions within the UCSB Associated Students (AS -student government), first as a member of the AS Legislative Council (now Senate), then AS President and lastly AS External Vice President for State-wideAffairs. I spent a year teaching high school immediately following my initial tenure at UCSB. Beginning May 1998 through June 1999, I participated in a Pilgrimage retracing the route of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade called the "Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage." During this thirteen-month sojourn, we visited, learned about, offered prayers and honored the history and legacy of enslaved African peoples, both past and present, by walking from Western Massachusetts to New Orleans, traveling through the Caribbean and returning the energy, prayers and even the earth from African burial grounds in the Americas back to the continent where we traveled from Gambia/Senegal in West Africa to Cape Town South Africa. I began my professional career at UCSB working for the Associated Students, first as the Student Government Advisor and then as the Assistant Director for Community Affairs. During this time, I embarked upon my graduate studies in the Department of Education at UCSB, earning a Masters Degree, and am completing my dissertation which explores the legacy and impact of student activism in a higher education setting. Beginning January 2018, I became the seventh Director of the UCSB Educational Opportunity Program, which very much represented a 'second-homecoming' having been an EOP student and Peer Mentor. What is more, I am one of the founding members of the Black staff support group "ucsbBlack" and serve a number of roles in the community, particularly with community-based and non-profit organizations. I live in Santa Barbara and have two beautiful, head-strong children.
